Permian Basin Opera (PBO) is bringing its highly anticipated "Mini Opera" production of Amahl and the Night Visitors to life across two neighboring college campuses.

• Two Essential Stops: The production hits Midland College for one night and Howard College for the other, expanding the opera's reach across the Permian Basin region.

• The Core Message: A heartwarming story about a young shepherd boy, his mother, and their miraculous encounter with three wise kings. It centers heavily on themes of community, grace, and unexpected generosity. 

• Local Talent Focus: The cast features local youth and adult performers specifically auditioned by PBO to bring these classic characters to life. 

 

Synopsis:

Amahl and the Night Visitors is a heartwarming, one-act Christmas opera by Gian Carlo Menotti that premiered on television in 1951. The story follows Amahl, a poor, imaginative 12-year-old shepherd boy with a physical disability who walks with a homemade crutch. He lives in a modest, drafty hut with his widowed mother, who worries constantly about their survival and impending poverty. Their lives change dramatically late one winter night when a knock at the door reveals three magnificently dressed kings—Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar—who are following a brilliant star to bring gifts to a miraculous newborn child.

The mother opens her home to the royal travelers, allowing them to rest and warm themselves by the fire. Amahl, fascinated by the kings and their page, asks them endless questions, while his mother gathers the local neighborhood shepherds to welcome the guests. The villagers arrive, singing joyfully, dancing, and offering modest gifts of food and hospitality to the three kings. After the celebration ends and the guests lie down to sleep, the mother, driven by desperation for her son's future, attempts to steal a small pouch of the kings' gold.

When the page catches her in the act, a struggle ensues that wakes the household. Instead of punishing her, King Melchior forgives her, stating that the holy child they seek will build a kingdom based on love rather than earthly wealth, and he allows her to keep the gold. Deeply moved by this grace and wishing to give something of his own to the newborn king, Amahl offers his most precious possession: his crutch. The moment he makes this selfless sacrifice, a miracle occurs, and he is suddenly healed and able to walk without assistance. Overjoyed and filled with gratitude, Amahl receives his mother's blessing to join the Three Kings on their pilgrimage to Bethlehem.
